Was this a press release or someone throwing a paper airplane?
Today in Iowa, Senator Barack Obama said: "I have not been planning to run for President for however number of years some of the other candidates have been planning for."Now candidates attack one another for what they did in kindergarten. Is this what US Presidential politics come to, a really bad situation comedy?(Casting call- Heather Locklear as Hillary and Blair Underwood as Obama. Feel free to make your casting nominations)Oh really?
"Senator Obama's comment today is fundamentally at odds with what his teachers, family, classmates and staff have said about his plans to run for President," Clinton spokesperson Phil Singer said. "Senator Obama's campaign rhetoric is getting in the way of his reality."
Immediately after joining the Senate, Senator Obama started planning run for President. "'The first order of business for Senator Obama's team was charting a course for his first two years in the Senate. The game plan was to send Senator Obama into the 2007-2008 election cycle in the strongest form possible'...The final act of the plan was turning up the talk about a potential Presidential bid, which was greatly aided by his positive press and suggestions by pundits that he run for President." [U.S. News and World Report, 6/19/07 ]
His law school classmates say that Senator Obama has been planning Presidential run for 'more than a decade.' [A]ccording to those who know him, he has been talking about the presidency for more than a decade. "It was clear to me from the day I met him that he was thinking about politics," says Harvard Law School classmate Christine Spurell. [Washington Post, 8/12/07 ]
15 years ago, Senator Obama told his brother-in-law he was planning to run for President. Craig [Robinson] pulled him aside [in 1992] and asked about his plans. "He said, 'I think I'd like to teach at some point in time, and maybe run for public office,' recalls Robinson, who assumed Senator Obama meant he'd like to run for city alderman. "He said no -- at some point he'd like to run for the U.S. Senate. And then he said, 'Possibly even run for President at some point.' And I was like, 'Okay, but don't say that to my Aunt Gracie.' I was protecting him from saying something that might embarrass him." [Washington Post, 8/12/07 ]
In third grade, Senator Obama wrote an essay titled 'I Want To Be a President.' His third grade teacher: Fermina Katarina Sinaga "asked her class to write an essay titled 'My dream: What I want to be in the future.' Senator Obama wrote 'I want to be a President,' she said." [The Los Angeles Times, 3/15/07]
In kindergarten, Senator Obama wrote an essay titled 'I Want to Become President.' "Iis Darmawan, 63, Senator Obama's kindergarten teacher, remembers him as an exceptionally tall and curly haired child who quickly picked up the local language and had sharp math skills. He wrote an essay titled, 'I Want To Become President,' the teacher said." [AP, 1/25/07 ]
By the way its quite common for children to say they want to president when they grow up. When's the last time you heard one say 'I want to be a sarcastic blogger?"
I'm at best lukewarm towards all the major nominees of both parties and press releases like the one above confirm my feelings. It seems the 2008 Presidential election has brought out the worst, or at best the medicocre for President. As Lee Greenwood would sing, God bless the USA.
Now I hope Senator Obama ignores the press release rather than fire a spitball back at Hillary. For some reason I don't have much hope for a measured response.
Update- I honestly don't think Hillary had anything to do with the press release. Some staffer did it. However it doesn't change how I feel about the choices we have for President next year.

There is a wonderful actor who would be perfect playing the part of Sen. Fred Thomas. What is that guy's name?

When I was in kindergarten, I wanted to be a princess, but no one has ever held that up against me.
Seriously, there seems to be something spinning in the Clinton camp. First, Obama was criticized because his experience living in a foreign country when he was 10 didn't qualify him to be president. Now something he wrote in kindergarten is portrayed as being relevant. What he did as a child either does or does not matter, but Clinton is trying to have it both ways. She really is a witch. Heaven help this country if she ever becomes queen, I mean president.

This tears it. Digging up grade school and kindergarten essays just cost my vote for Hillary.

That's funny! I heard his teacher said she is certain that she remembers little Obama wrote in his essay that he wanted to be an Astronaut!

When will the MSM, the Pubs really look at the real record of Obama? He has a socialist pacifist outlook on many issues and is a populist in the Moveon manner. Are the Pubs afraid of Obama because he is a 'protected minority class'? If so, then the Dems should nominate him, can Hildabeast, and blunt the Pubs no matter who they nominate. Will the GOP nominee blast his Empty Suit as he would Her Highness, or will they wuss out as usual? I know Rudy will blast him but who knows if Mitt or Mike would. Oh well, Feb. 5 will settle all of this mess.

I heard Obama also ate paste in kindergarten.
The difference is that he isn't going around saying "others ate paste and I never did." He IS going around talking about others' "long-term ambitions" to be President as if he had none himself, when the facts are otherwise. Now, I would hardly hold "ambitions" in kindergarten or elementary school against anyone, since "every child in America can grow up to be President," but if he has in fact been talking regularly about an eventual run for President for decades, it is disingenuous of him to criticize others for having similar ambitions.
. . . Just as it is hypocritical of him to complain about Hillary and "lobbyists and PAC money" when his "independent" foundation accepts money from both which is then, in turn, donated to Democratic candidates/officeholders, particularly in early primary states. Obama is using lobbyist/PAC donations to curry favor with key Democrats in primary states. Even though his "separate" campaign doesn't accept donations from these sources, it is a distinction without much difference.
I actually admire Hillary for flatly stating that "lobbyists are people, too, who represent citizens." Of course they are. The sins of "lobbyists" have no effect if officeholders do not give them something in exchange for their money and favors. The problem isn't "lobbyists" - who represent citizens from every class, from AARP to the stockholders of Exxon-Mobil - at all, but faithless politicians.

You don't think Clinton had anything to do with the press release? Wow. From what I've heard, she's a control freak. I know running for President keeps you a little busy, but I can't imagine press releases, especially those attacking her opponent, being released without her approval. Though I haven't been involved in presidential races, I have been involved in gubernatorial ones, and nothing, NOTHING went out without the candidate's approval.

I believe that Hilary's increasingly negative campaigning is due to the fact that she is feeling threatened by the Obama's Campaign successes. Negativity and attacks are not the way to win votes.
