Fred Thompson: the gloves to come off?

Fred Thompson says he won't attack other Republicans - unless they attack him first. Roger Simon has the story for The Politico:

When I asked him if he is an 11th Commandment man -- Never speak ill of a fellow Republican -- he responded, "I am more of a 12th Commandment man: Don't speak ill of them until they speak ill of me. And then really speak ill of them."

Thompson's stump speech contains the warning that Republicans must "stay with our principles" when it comes to choosing a nominee.

I asked him if that was a veiled reference to Rudy Giuliani.

Thompson made a face of mock horror and laughed.

"I would not see many positive signs if I thought the election was going to be next week," he said. "And if we beat each other up unmercifully in this primary process and are not able to appeal to independent-minded folks and working people, we will lose."

I asked him if that meant his party needed to find Reagan Democrats again.

"I don't think we need to find them; I don't think they have gone anywhere," he said. "I think we [Republicans] are the ones maybe that have moved in some cases."

Read the full article at the link above. Thompson will join the rest of the field for the first time in a debate next Tuesday in Michigan, which has vaulted to the front of the primary schedule. He reportedly raised about $8 million in the short time since declaring his candidacy Labor Day - not a knock-your-socks-off total, but given the window he left himself, not half bad, either.

There are some good comments there though I am voting for Rudy first. The Pubs have to unite. They are getting smeared on a daily basis by the media, Dems and even each other. Just look at the blogs. You would think that Rudy, Mitt, John and Mike are slobs, traitors and more evil than Hillary. It is nauseating. It is time for Pubs to unite. Vote for your choice but then vote for the winner . It is not time to just give up and whine when the pacifist socialists win the whole ball of wax.

Lee Ward:

Thompson has been mumbling and bumbling his way through speeches, and unless he hits a homer in the debate and really impresses, he's pretty much toast imho.

Hell, he can't do worse than Hillary's forced laugh, so he really should let the stops out and swing for the fences. I'm afraid it could be his last real time at bat, snf medicority already abounds with that group of candidates -- no points there.

I'm looking forward to the debate and finally learning what Thompson is all about. I listened to the last (?) debate and was most impressed with Huckabee, but he'll never win. Rudy didn't impress me that much until afterwards when he wasn't in the debate format. McCain came out a bit more forcefully, but he's not going to get anywhere. So I truly hope that Thompson hits a home run in the next debate and that he will appeal to the masses.

COgirl:

And on another topic (sorry, Jim), today Obama has come out and said that he's in favor of eliminating nuclear weapons. If that isn't the dumbest thing! If you want to remain a powerful nation, you have to continue to have those weapons and threaten to use them to defend the country. Our enemies won't lay down their nukes so why should we? That man is just downright scary. Not C-in-C material.

I like Fred, but I'm not sure yet. He needs to inject a little more humor while interacting like the above example.

I was please to read that.

I'm testing, too, to see if this will corral craven censors. He's cowed on Wizbang except for the sockpuppets he displays so proudly on his (short)horns.
