Former New York Senator Al D'Amato endorsed Fred Thompson for President on a New York TV talk show yesterday, according to Ryan Sager of the New York Sun:
It's not (I repeat not) a surprise that the former New York senator would chose to oppose Rudy Giuliani, his hometown candidate. As I got into a bit in this column, the two men have had a longtime feud going on.
The feud also involved Mr. Giuliani endorsing Mario Cuomo for governor in 1994 against Mr. D'Amato's hand-picked candidate, the much-loved-by-conservatives (cough) George Pataki. Thus, this has to be seen as raising the chances of a Pataki endorsement of Mr. Thompson. (The two men have been spotted canoodling in Manhattan.)
Read his whole post at the link above. Fred Thompson is doing pretty well for guy who isn't in the race. He was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno this evening, so I tuned in. Fred appeared relaxed and confident, and did well but not spectacularly so. Someone needs to remind him to unbutton his jacket when he sits down, though - it gave him something of a disheveled look.
My apologies to those Tommy Thompson supporters whose hopes I may have falsely raised in the title.

Actually, it may have helped. We've seen a myriad of politicians doing everything they can to look polished, many times with painful results. Not being so concerned that everything looks picturesque may actually convey sincerity and confidence. There is, of course, a line-- sometimes a fine one--between looking relaxed and looking careless, but not having a toothy grin of pearl-white teeth and well-coiffed hair that can withstand a 50 mph wind may work in his favor.

I think the disheveled look will actually hurt Thompson because it will remind folks of his lack of polish when it comes to experience. I agree that he looked comfortable, but not really convincing. He didn't handle the question well about "Fire in the Belly" or laziness. It was almost as if he were saying, "Yes, I've been lazy in the past, but this is different, this is the presidency"
All in all, I get a good vibe from him, but not a good presidential vibe and I think he will fade as he has to face the scrutiny the rest of the guys have had to face.

Senator Pothole supports .....not Rudy! Hem. Well, the Senator has no great group of voters supporting him. He lost to Chuckie and now he wants Fred. Well, I like Fred but only Rudy has any chance at all to carry NY or at least make Hil spend lots of money there.
