Despite the crowing over the outlier ARG polls, the McCain campaign is showing more signs of trouble. The campaign has fired three more key field staffers in South Carolian. The Chaser reports:
We now learn that McCain has laid off another 3 South Carolina field reps. A source close to the McCain camp says that Blake Montgomery and Brian Haskins have both been let go. Haskins is the son of State Representative Gloria Haskins.
Read the whole post at the above link. Go to the home page and see that the third fired staffer is also a well-connected figure in the Palmetto State, the son of major auto dealer Vic Bailey.
This is not the sign of a campaign with momentum, as they were claiming with the ARG polls from Iowa, NH, and SC (which, as we noted Tuesday, don't match up with any other recent polling by other outfits). It is possible resources are being diverted to Florida, which recently moved up its primary date, but considering that South Carolina is one of only two states where the parties may set their own primary dates (because they have to pay for them themselves) and the SC GOP will move up their primary to stay "first in the South," McCain would likely keep on such well-known staffers if he could afford it.
Thanks to Dean Barnett at Hugh Hewitt, who is also running a pool on when McCain will withdraw. Enter now, and you could win some surplus "Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act World Tour 2004" tee-shirts, a "Gang of 14" decoder ring, or even a "McCain-Kennedy Immigration Reform Act" border crossing sign . . .
