When the Michael J. Fox ad aired, the Anchoress and I discussed whether or not Talent should respond. The response, complete with celebrities, is set to begin airing tomorrow in Missouri.
Hot Air has more.
See my somewhat lengthy earlier post here where I made politically incorrect comments about Fox's condition even before Rush did.
Update: Don't miss this post at Ankle Biting Pundits.
Update II: Please read Dean Barnett's followup post on the subject of the Fox ad. He is taking some flak for his statements from the moonbat brigade, but he is saying something that definitely needs to be said.
First, given the ridiculous protocols of our day, I feel it's necessary to establish the fact that my victim bona fides compare favorably to Fox's. For those of you new to the site, I have Cystic Fibrosis. CF is a genetic disease, so I've had it all my life. It is no exaggeration to say that while Fox was gamboling around the set of Family Ties in the mid-1980's, I was fighting for my life. Since then, my health has ranged from shockingly good for a CF patient to rather precarious.Read it all.
I say this not to elicit anyone's sympathy. Quite the contrary, I have willingly entered the rough and tumble of politics via the blogosphere expecting no quarter. Nor have I offered any. If I have a code, that's it.Liberal Democrats, on the other hand, often operate as if guided by the exact opposite principle. They think a person's victim status means that he must necessarily be treated with kid gloves. Max Cleland has become a voice of perpetual outrage since he was ousted from the Senate in 2002. The Democrats bring him out every time they wish to create a visual representation of how mean Republicans are. Cleland's triple amputee status serves as an implicit and often explicit indictment of Republican politics - so venal are Republicans, Cleland's very presence seems to scream, they attacked this heroic man.
But I'm here to tell you that you're not a hero just because you get sick or have bad luck. You're not even special. Before we get off this planet, we'll all have serious illness or serious bad luck, likely both. Sorry to say, the world isn't full of 6 billion heroes.
Update: This guy is scary. I wish he would make an ad for the Dems.

Powerful ad.
I read somewhere today that in his book, Fox tells of stopping taking his meds before testifying before Congress. Looks like he did the same thing here in order to generate more sympathy for his political position.
Or maybe he just gets his meth from McCaskill.

That has to be the worst ad of this cycle. I almost nodded of watching Kurt Warner babble. Maybe if they found someone relevant to the issue, like a scientist or someone who also is afflicted with a condition, this ad might have made sense. But the lady from Everybody loves Raymond is about as relevant and powerful as Ben Aflack endorsing Kerry.

This is VERY powerful. Those are very respected people and could well make a difference. Jeff Suppan and Kurt Warner for the St. Louis side of the state, and Mike Sweeney for the Kansas City side. I live across the line in Kansas, and I don't know how I would vote if I lived in Missouri. My company is one of the supporters of the question, and I respect them very highly, too.

Patricia Heaton (the lady from Raymond) is actually one of the few celebrities who is outspokenly pro-life. I think she is Catholic, if I am not mistaken, and has spoken out on life issues several times before over the past few years. I agree that it would be more effective with an expert on the research, but to include someone with Parkinson's, or another disease, would only increase the emotion quotient.

Evangelical Republicans are squarely on the wrong side of this issue, and my guess is that this issue may, in retrospect, end up being one of the deciding factors that sends Independents and centrist Republicans to the blue side of the buffet table this November.

I agree with Lee on this one. It's apples and oranges people.
The poor voters of Missouri have more than one tough choice:
Stem cell research or not; and
Claire McCaskill vs Roy Blunt.
Wow, I pity them....glad I left Missery.

Jim, you did not read anything from his book.
You say you read somewhere about somebody reporting about reading his book.
Probably you didn't read anyting at all, but you were just quoting what we all heard Rush say this week.
So you should know, for this condition, if you're off your meds you lock up, not shake.
Then the nice quip about Fox getting meth from Mc Caskill.
Jim, I hope you can become a better human being. I hope you never have to experience this.
What's wrong with you?
John

John, you brain-dead dolt, if you READ my post, I never said I read the book. I read a quote from the book. If I remembered where, I would have mentioned or linked it, but I don't. I read several dozen posts and articles every single day. If I had to guess where, I'd say NRO.
You are casigating me for telling you the truth. I don't swear the quote was accurate, BUT I remember Fox was indeed like the commercial at his congressional hearing, but I've seen him in far better states in between.
Now, if you are claiming he DID NOT say that in his book, I will happily search the quote down or buy the damn thing for the sheer pleasure of showing you a liar.
Is that what you are saying, or are you just blowing smoke out your butt as usual?

Okay, just 'cause I love y'all, I found the quote - it's the same one I saw, but at a different location:
Excerpt from Lucky Man.
It appears he made the conscious decision to appear without meds to shock the panel. Just because he is a victim of a terrible disease, are we not allowed to question whether or not this constitutes a deception? And, whether or not he adopted the same tactic for the ad he filmed for McCaskill?
Should decisions on science OR elections be made on the basis of contrived emotional sympathetic reactions?

You want a scientist, well, I'm one. A molecular cell biologist. And I resent this manipulation of a complex issue. Embryonic stem cell research may never offer a cure. Right now, it mainly grows tumors in mice. Adult stem cell research is moving along showing results in actual humans that are very encouraging. And, guess what, they are helping all of the diseases that the embryonic cells are overhyped to "cure" someday. And helping right now. Today!! Don't be so overtrusting of scientists. They, like all, want their grant money to flow and they will get more if the federal agencies can fund them. And, what really bugs me is the idea that stem cells of any type will cure Alzheimer's. That disease is not a candidate for that therapy as is Parkinson's and diabetes. Yet, it is always mentioned.
