Swift Boat ads backer funds new group

Bob Perry, the Texas builder who was a major contributor to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, has given $5 million to a new "527" group, the Economic Freedom Fund. Ben Evans of the Associated Press reports:

The Republican donor who helped bankroll the Swift Boat attacks on Democratic Sen. John Kerry's war record has given $5 million to a new group targeting Democratic candidates.

Bob J. Perry, a Texas homebuilder with close ties to White House advisor Karl Rove and former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, recently made the hefty donations to the Economic Freedom Fund, a newly created California group.

The group is a so-called 527 that is not subject to conventional campaign finance restrictions and can spend unlimited amounts on election advocacy, similar to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. In the 2004 presidential race, the group of Vietnam veterans made unsubstantiated allegations challenging Kerry's record of wartime heroism.

So far, the new group -- which lists Perry as its sole donor -- has spent slightly more than $500,000 on television ads and mailings criticizing Democratic Reps. Jim Marshall of Georgia and Alan Mollohan of West Virginia, according to a disclosure form filed last week with the Federal Election Commission.

Scrapiron:

Traitor John stated today that he was going to kick the Swift Boat Vet's a**e* from coast to coast. Guess he is now a miracle man. They would whip his a** before he got off of his fat a**. Wasn't he the one that had to keep changing his story because all of the Swift Boat Vet's charges proved true?

Has anyone seen his complete military record yet? He promised on national TV to sign the SF180 and release the complete phony record. Guess he's still hiding his dishonorable discharge, or maybe Momma T has spent a billion or two getting the records phonied up again. Seems they have to be revised on a 5 year cycle. Funny that in 26 years of retirement mine have never been altered in any way and I served my complete tour in VN. Maybe I need to go back and add a few medals.

The only way John Kerry could kick anybody's ass is if he signed up for a charity donkey-polo event.

He should stick to windsurfing off Nantucket, and leave the Swiftboating to others who were in-country long enough to learn the place names.

unsubstantiated allegations

Typical editorializing from the agenda-driven Associated Ass*olistic Press. Numerous corroborating eyewitness accounts are now "unsubstantiated allegations." Yeah, right.

Anyone notice the spin?... (Below threshold)
Wanderlust:

Anyone notice the spin?

No, not that spin, about the "unsubstantiated allegations" regarding the Swifties. I don't remember anyone in the MSM providing any proof to the contrary, either.

What I mean, is this spin, which I think is far more reaching, and revealing (emphasis mine):

"Bob J. Perry, a Texas homebuilder with close ties to White House advisor Karl Rove and former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, recently made the hefty donations..."

and

"So far, the new group — which lists Perry as its sole donor — has spent slightly more than $500,000 on television ads and mailings..."

Hmmmm.

Anyone notice in that article a fair comparison between Perry and George Soros? Or any comments about Soros being the sole donor to MoveOn.org and the mountains of cash he has blown on that site? Or any of Soros' related activities?

Didn't think so, either.

/sigh
