New Democrat Web Video Risks Backfire

Pat and BDP at Ankle Biting Pundits call the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee's new ad appalling and predict it will backfire. I think they are right.

Update: I agree with most of what Ed Morrisey has to say about the ad.

I think the flag-draped coffin image opens the Dems up for charges of hypocrisy since they were so outraged by Republicans' use of 9/11 images in the past. The thing that really hit me when I saw the ad was the doctored Tom Delay photo. Forget that they have more "culture of corruption" figures in their party than Republicans could even put into a 60 second ad, but not only did they decide to stick with that failed messgae, but they decided to use photoshop pictures? What are they going to do next? Photoshop little Hitler mustaches on President Bush pictures and run them? The ad was so much over-the-top distortion that it can't help but backfire with the general electorate. From the nutroots though, they will probably receive rave reviews.

Update II: Speaking of that doctored mugshot, Right Angle at Human Events has some news about where the photo was most likely obtained and it should be extremely embarrassing to the Democrats. That is, if anything could embarrass them after running that ad.

Update III: The ad has been removed from the website as a result of not only Republican criticism, but in response to calls from some Democrats to take it down.

Any decent person will put the ad on the same level as the video of the two American soldiers that were slaughtered by the crazed Islamist. There will be some rabid left wingers, that are on the same level as the terrorists that slaughtered the Soldiers, that will approve of the ad.

Hmmm. The greater subtly is the close. You note that the pans to current Dim leaders is very short in comparison to the long play of Clinton. So to close on a 'up note' the Dims have to reach back 3 election cycles to find a positive image.

What's that tell ya? UnHuh. They are even more adrift than they are willing to admit.

Kimyl Oh!:

I don't think its bad advertising to have a "lowlight" reel of all the failures of this administration. Of course, as strong GOP advocates you hate it, because it reminds you that, Oops! we went to war with the wrong country, we dropped the ball with Katrina, our energy plan is about as strong as our exit strategy for Iraq, and things have been on steady decline since Clinton left office.

I think the Dems should go with a more hopeful message of their plan to improve, but it doesn't hurt to draw strong contrast with the failures of the GOP.

I mean, looking for objective analysis of this video here is as fruitless as possible.

Also, lying about sex, cheating on your wife, these are personal indiscretions. Like drunk driving, or using cocaine, or operating a failed business. I don't want a fanatical, self-righteous leader (they have a bad track record historically), I want sound governance.

Anyway, keep re-inforcing the hate the media, hate the Democrats message that I see at every conservative blog. Where are your ideas? What's the next big bungle?

Posed from the left to the ... (Below threshold)

Posed from the left to the right, "Where are your ideas?" is perhaps the funniest thing I have heard in months.

Right you are, Falze!... (Below threshold)

Right you are, Falze!

The last new idea from the left was Ted Kennedy's proposal to nationalize health care, as laid out in his 1972 book, In Critical Condition.

For the Democrats' long-promised "New Directions" agenda, they had to set the Wayback Machine to 1967.

Let the left keep up their whining, though. It keeps them in practice for Election Night.

Kimyl Oh!:

I think that the reason you hear very few "new" ideas from the left is that most of their successful ones became policy, and their platform now seems to be "rational policy-making, remember those days?"

I would like to see them put forth a comprehensive plan to clarify the tax system, but that is going to be such an ugly struggle it is almost pointless to try. Everyone has their favorite tax cuts and credits and loopholes that simplification will be a tough road to hoe.

Here are some ideas your party could try:
--Defending America's borders with more than National Guardsmen and rhetoric
--Inspecting port cargo and protecting our large cities instead of handing out DHS pork to Omaha
--Funding education. As things stand, you might be better off putting tuition on a credit card than a Federal student loan
--A plan for social security that does not include borrowing 2 trillion dollars and hoping the stock market helps people, and if it doesn't, well you are screwed
--An economic plan that creates jobs here and rewards the middle class, and maybe even raises wages
--An OPENLY DEBATED energy plan that reduces costs, invests in technology, and addresses global warming and the Middle East conundrum
--A means of taxation with some hope of funding our government, or the balls to cut programs or reduce funding
--Getting serious about sex education, instead of paying people with our tax dollars to peddle abstinence nonsense

The big ideas from the right seem to be "privatize and cut taxes" as some magic for everything. You are on your own...is that what we mean by ownership society?

We face problems as a nation, sure, but the GOP means of addressing them has shown little efficacy---report after report shows that our WoT is not helping, our borders remain porous, our deficits are growing, wages are flat, the government is not investing in research or new technology for medicine or energy, and science has been subverted in favor of a literal translation of the Bible.

Can someone on this site please admit to one bad decision by this administration, or vocalize any remonstration of government policy of late? I am tired of hearing the positive spin, and if you were objective instead of loyal, you might get sick of it as well....

Here is an idea. The GOP should create a commercial depicting what would happen if the Democrats seize control of Congress, which should be easy to do since all one would need is footage of the New Jersey government shutdown.

To the contrary, I think Kimyl should be the spokesman for the DNC... the more I read her posts, the more I realize she's got the 'Baffle 'em with BS' routine down pat. If I were Kimyl, I'd be calling and emailing Dr. Dean nonstop to secure that post.

After all, didn't the Dems tell us in 2002 and 2004 that they didn't get their message out? Who better to present that message...

Kimyl Oh!:

I am not running a marketing campaign here, I am trying to debunk GOP rhetoric or challenge the efficacy/wisdom of GOP policy. Sorry that cannot be done in 30 second ads featuring babies and waving flags.

Ideas:
Fund border agents, fund the INS, find people who stay too long and deport them, set up a program where more people can come here and work legally, crack down on businesses that hire immigrants.

Inspect cargo in our ports, secure our great cities and monuments instead of obscure townships in the heartland, don't invade countries that are not state sponsors of terror, work with the overwhelming majority of people around the world to stamp out radicalism and terrorism, don't kick out translators because they are homosexuals, respect contrasting opinions on the strategy of war, develop a serious approach to aviation security.

Instead of income tax cuts for the rich and dividends/estate tax cuts, focus on tax cuts that will really drive prosperity, such as investing in new labor, new technology, etc., raise the minimum wage to increase consumer spending, adequately fund education so that this "commodity" can be used more readily to advance our workforce, provide money to states to fund NCLB, higher education and job training, give up on voodoo economics and stop rewarding wealth over work.

Invest in alternate energy, promote a strong EPA to hold polluters accountable, provide research money through the EPA to explore technological solutions to CO2, mercury, ozone and other poisons, put a conservationist in charge of Dept. of Interior instead of a logging lobbyist, reduce tarrifs on lumber from Canada so we can have cheap lumber and preserve our forests....

If you want a battle of ideas, go right ahead. The ideas of accountability, environmental protection, taking care of all Americans, real homeland security are winning ideas for Democrats. And don't even start about health care, where the facts indicate that HSA's help about 10% of the population, where universal insurance would help 100% of people and businesses.

We don't need ideas like privative social security, privatize health care, cut taxes for the rich, cut the rights of regular citizens, spy on citizens without a warrant, attack sovereign nations and foster terrorism abroad, let 300,000 Americans become refugees, the list goes on and on of GOP ideas that the public just does not like.

When you get a new idea aside from privatize, tax cuts, and we know what's best for your personal life, let me know. We've heard them and sent them back.

Well, since we have had complete GOP control, the popularity of the president and congress has fallen steadily, people rejected the major policy moves outside of cutting taxes (always an easy winner until people understand deficits), and people have a negative view of our current trajectory.

Name some successful GOP policies in the last 5 years.

One really good accomplishment no thanks to the Treason Times: How many domestic terrorist attacks have happened since 9/11?

(I forget that's a downside to democrats)

Kimyl Oh! It won't matter one bit what democrats say their policies are, we have experienced the tax tax and weaken the military and we KNOW who they are.

Brace yourself, Kimyl - you'll be disappointed again this year when your 'majority' does NOT go along with you.

Kimyl Oh!:

We have had no domestic terror attacks here, true, but that seems to be a low threshold for respect. How has our "policy" helped people in London, Madrid and elsewhere?

Weakening the military is something no one wants to do. PReventing it from becoming a dumping ground for billions of dollars in waste is in our best interest. We can cut out half of the pentagon budget and still be the military juggernaut we have been.

I am not rooting just for my side, I am rooting for all parties of government to return to reasonable, responsible government. I have said repeatedly that I do not want a Democratic party ruled country, or a socialist state, or anything extreme.

What I do want is open government, honest debate, fair elections, effective anti-terror policy, controlled spending, sound investments, a realistic tax base, and a government that invests its efforts in the demand side of the economy as much as it does in the supply side. I want the Democrats to be serious and the GOP as well, so that our country can move forward and you can hold on to your "no attacks" line. We, of course, will not talk about how the biggest attack happened on Bush's watch despite warnings, because that would ruin his infallibility doctrine...
